La Liga returns: who will be crowned champion?

The La Liga never disappoints an unbiased fan. The rich history and the staggering number of top-class players make for a sensational season each year.

La Liga returns: who will be crowned champion?

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the La Liga season was postponed until Thursday when it returned with an eye catching game between Sevilla and Real Betis, with Sevilla defeating Real Betis by ‘2’ goals to nil. This means a renewed challenge by the league’s top flight teams, restarting the season with no home advantage and games played  in a-behind-closed-doors.

To date, a clear favourite is quite vague. All three giants, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid have a restructuring underway. They all have some issues to solve, even Barcelona; and at first glance, the first one to tackle this obstacles will be a game changer.

Barcelona leads Real Madrid by ‘2’ points ahead of the remaining ’11’ games, with Lionel Messi as the league top goal scorer (19 goals).

Barcelona have the slight advantage after 27 games. Since 2010/2011, only one side has failed to go on to lift the trophy after being top at this stage. That was Real Madrid, who eventually finished third as neighbours Atletico lifted the trophy.

There are other challenges for Barca. No one thinks this will be straight-forward. They still have to play away at Sevilla and Villarreal, places where they have struggled in the past, while they have tough home games to come against Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid.

With La Liga’s second most talented player behind Messi, Hazard, and Marco Asensio back from injury, Real Madrid is believed to be challenging for the trophy.

The La Liga 2019/2020 season has once again met expectations. With upsets and high scoring games, you might find yourself at a loss when picking a winner between the three giants. So the question here is, who will we crowned champion of La Liga 2019/2020? Can Real Madrid go top of the table with the remainder of the season; will you write off the underdogs, Atletico Madrid?
