Nigeria and Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi, on Sunday suffers a concussion after a sickening clash of heads during a Bundesliga match in which they lost 1-0 against Augsburg.
The 22 years-old is currently on a season-long loan in the German Bundesliga with FSV Mainz 05.
On Sunday, he was selected in the starting line-up in a top-flight clash against Augsburg.
Few minutes into the game, he was stretchered off the pitch with a neck brace, as he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Mainz 05, in a twitter post, confirmed that the player suffers a concussion after a clash with Felix Uduokhai and will remain in hospital overnight as a “precautionary measure”.
“Our striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a concussion in his collision with Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai and is spending the night in hospital as a precautionary measure”. Mainz revealed via their official Twitter account.
Awoniyi has scored just one goal in as many as 12 games for Mainz 05 this season.
He is yet to have a senior team appearance for Liverpool and have had series of loan spells with Gent and Frankfurt.
Negotiation is in place between Mainz and Liverpool for his signature, as they hope to bolster their attack next season
Speaking on Saturday, Mainz 05’s director, Rouven Schroder, claims the club were in an ‘exchange’ with Liverpool over potentially re-signing the Nigerian.
He told Bild: “I am very, very positive about him.
“Taiwo never lets himself down, always had his head up and the absolute will to improve was never negative”.
“It is a symbol of how team sport works. We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position”.
‘We are now waiting for the last games. Then we’ll see what the next steps are”.
With their next game coming up against Borussia Dortmund, Mainz will hope their man, Awoniyi returns before the game.
Mainz sit 15th in the table, three points above drop zone with three games for the remainder of the season.
They’ve only won nine games, drawing four and losing 18 which saw them gather 31 points from 31 games.
